Local Surbiton History

Is there a Local Hisotry club or society for Surbiton? I am researching for a friend, and would like to find if a certain house on Catherine Road is still there, or if it has been demolished for the 'new' flats. Any advice gratefully received!

I would like some help too. My mother was born in a house called Fieldhead in Corkram Road in 1912. Opposite lived Mrs Cundy who was nice to the children and my grandparents rode on her land (which is now build over). I have been up and down Corkram Road but I can't find Fieldhead. Can anyone help? thanks, Eleo

What number Catherine Road are you looking for ? There are still plenty of older houses there. You can probably look it up on Google Street View.

Thanks, I did try google earthing it, but I am looking at a census record that says 2 Catherine Road, and it looks like those lower numbers are where the flats are now. As a clue, the house next door is called the stables! A probate record calls the house 'Lockleys' and I wondered if the house isn't there any more, a local history society may have old photos, or, as you say, may be able to say that it looked like one of the old houses further up. Nice street by the way!

Yes, if it is number 2 then that will be right by the junction of Maple Road on the left hand side. The first few of those houses have gone and become 1960-70's blocks of flats.

Even by Surbiton standards, the housing on Catherine Road is very mixed in terms of age. Clearly, it was originally a Victorian road and a lot of the grand detached villas still remain. There is a lot of post war infill, but there are also a lot of nice 1920's detached houses. It seems unlikely that these would have replaced the Victorian houses so soon.

This whole area used to be part of a large country estate with the main house being on what is now Grove Road (it has gone, but the gate house remains). This makes me wonder if they only sold part of the land off for development at a time.
