Councillors on the Surbiton neighbourhood committee have suggested calling a newly-built cul-de-sac in the town Alcott Close in recognition of the retired alpine skier.
The street has been created as part of the development of two new blocks of flats off of South Terrace, and councillors were invited to suggest names for the road, in consultation with London Fire Brigade.
Alcott Close has been put forward by Conservative Berrylands ward councillors Mike Head and Andy Johnson. Five other names have been suggested, all by the ward's Liberal Democrat representative Sushilla Abraham. They are Cedar Lane, Flower Road, Hythe Road, Station Grove and Station Lane.
Alcott, 32, is Britain’s most successful alpine skier and is the only Briton to win a run in a World Cup race - in the giant slalom in Austria in 2008. She competed in four Winter Olympics and battled back from three seperate leg breaks during her career. Although not specifically mentioned in Kingston Council's guidelines, naming new streets after living people is rare, and usually only permitted in exceptional circumstances.
A decision on the new road name will be made at the neighbourhood committee meeting at Dysart School on Tuesday, September 2.
